Primary Flight: Back to Basics During Art Basel
Current
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Once again during this year’s Art Basel, graff writers and street artists will hit the Wynwood streets in Miami’s second installment of the internationally acclaimed, site specific, street level, mural installation Primary Flight.
This year’s exhibition features 40 of today’s most respected local and international graffiti artists, including Blek le Rat (Juxtapoz #95) David Choe (Juxtapoz #72) Retna, Revok, Reyes (all in Juxtapoz #78) Will Barras (Juxtapoz #91) and many more!
Graffiti has come a long way, from the back seats of police cars to gracing the walls of the world’s greatest collections and museums. Primary Flight’s original concept and purpose is to provide these artists with outdoor, concrete wall space, allowing them free reign to install their art as they see fit - back into graffiti’s original environment - in what is arguably its most appealing format.
Curated by BOOKSIIII, Lynn Yohana Howard, Logan Hicks, and Anthony Spinello, Primary Flight will take off during Art Basel, December 4 – 7, 2008.
Maps outlining the street installation will be available for download online at primaryflight.com and on location in the Wynwood streets.

Herbert Baglione has “Two Broken Knees”
Features
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

The highly anticipated exhibit Two Broken Knees, a new series of work by Herbert Baglione, opens in London at Lazarides Gallery Greek Street this Friday, November 21st, 2008.
If you’re not yet familiar with Baglione’s work, you should be. This Brazilian artist is an established contemporary painter who draws on strong simple mural designs, extreme physical figures, and human and alien icons, rendered in the style of cave drawings. His style has influenced the vibrant street art movement in South America for at least ten years. His position as one of Brazil’s most distinctive artists has also cemented his international acclaim in the design and art worlds.
Jaded with the scene and what he saw around him, Baglione started experimenting with new ways to look at the street, using the extremes of urban architecture to create his paintings, provoking a new dialogue. The effect is both visually and psychologically arresting in its intensity.
Two Broken Knees will exhibit at Lazarides Gallery Greek Street November 21 - December 20, 2008.
Watch the artist work in the video below, and then take an exclusive sneak preview look at ten of the twenty new acrylic and enamel paintings from Baglione’s Two Broken Knees this way…

The Uroboros Project
Current
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Street artist Gaia sent us an email we wanted to share:
“My girlfriend and I are collaborating on a project that will culminate in three installations, the final one concluding in January for a show at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles. The pictures included are from our first piece that was set along the Jones Falls River. We had a little gathering from people at our school before the bridge was washed away with the recent rains.”
Allow us to further explain: The Uroboros Project is a collaborative effort between artists Rachel Lowing and Gaia. Spawned from a mutual interest in articulating the inexorably intertwined relationship between people and nature, they examine the act of consumption and its implications on contemporary life.
The project’s title, Uroboros, is derived from a circular symbol depicting a snake, or less commonly a dragon, swallowing its tail as an emblem of wholeness, totality, or infinity. The photo above showcases their bridge, part of the first installation by the Jones Falls River in Baltimore. The photo below highlights the accompanying, and extremely time-intensive, piece that includes a hand-made dried fish skin wrap and portrait print on plastic bags. Get it? Fish skins, plastic bags...nature, consumption, infinity? If you're still a bit confused, learn more on The Uroboros Project at uroborosproject.blogspot.com

Kuildoosh's "Smoking Jackets for Jerry"
Current
Monday, 17 November 2008

Smoking Jackets for Jerry is the next exhibit to hit Brooklynite Gallery November 22nd. First off, lets get things clear: Kuildoosh (pronounced Coo-el-doosh) and Wet Shame Knights (WSK) are both part and parcel of the same creative package from South West England. The three artists behind the duel crew identity are Mat Eko, Dan Mudwig, and Graham Paris, some of the most progressive English artists of the graffiti and street art genre.
Kuildoosh’s working styles have been molded by the need to advance, elaborate, and ornament the letterform and alphabet. In recent years, their joining with artist Mudwig has led to the emergence of a far more unpredictable and experimental style. Much of the group's outdoor painting is now done in secret locations, deep in the depths of the English countryside. Luckily for you, it will be on display in Brooklyn from November 22nd thru December 20th,
See what these crazy Brits have to offer in Smoking Jackets for Jerry (aside from the tasty inflatable fun above) at brooklynitegallery.com. If that doesn’t help clear things up, take a look at the video below (which, to be honest, just may make you even more confused) and then hit up kuildoosh.com.

“In It Together” with Nicholas Bohac, Matthew Rodriguez, Saelee Oh & Jill Bliss
Features
Monday, 17 November 2008

In It Together features dual showings Drill, Baby, Drill! by Nicholas Bohac and Matthew Rodriguez and Gathered Together by Saelee Oh and Jill Bliss at Tinlark Gallery in Hollywood.
Drill, Baby, Drill! is the Tinlark debut of mixed media artworks by Nicholas Bohac and Matthew Rodriguez. An MFA graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Nicholas Bohac combines printmaking, painting, drawing, and materials such as sand and foil to reconsider the landscape tradition, eliminating the idealization common in the genre and injecting, in its place, commentary on the ecological climate in which we coexist.
Matthew Rodriguez lives and works in Austin, Texas. His paintings, photography and public art convey political and social themes of environmental stewardship as well as addressing our unpredictable relationships with our loved ones. He disguises these hefty subject matters with both humor and finesse.
In the project room, Saelee Oh joins with Jill Bliss to create Gathered Together, a mixed media installation (shown) inspired by their 4th annual collaborative calendar project. Their created microcosms of detached yet connected elements remind us that although we may be isolated "islands" at times, we are never truly alone in the world.
In It Together runs thru December 6, 2008 but if you can’t make it out to Los Angeles, take a look at some of the work featured in the show here…
